Yersong Offers Free Personalized Songs of About One Minute With No Account, Email or Payment Required
Users edit the lyrics before anything is recorded, then get the sung song, an album cover and a shareable video
Yersong, at https://www.yersong.com, makes a free personalized song of roughly one minute for someone you love. It writes the lyrics, sings the song and films a short video. There is no account to create, no email address to give and no payment card to enter. Users choose an occasion, type the person's name, pick roughly how old they are and share a few details. Yersong shows the lyrics first, and the user can rewrite any line before anything is recorded. The finished song comes with the singing, an album cover drawn for it and a short video on a page that anyone with the link can open. The occasions include birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, graduations, retirements, a new baby, congratulations, thank you and just because.
Yersong is meant for people with an occasion coming up and a person in mind, including those who would not describe themselves as writers or musicians. The song is built from what the user already knows about the recipient. A parent might make one for a child's birthday, a couple might make one for a wedding or anniversary, and a friend or relative might mark a new baby, a graduation or a retirement.
The process begins with a short form. The user picks an occasion from the list. If none fits, a "Something else" option accepts a description in a few words. For a new baby, the form also asks whether the song is for the baby, the parents or someone else celebrating. The user types the person's name, selects roughly how old they are and adds a few details about them. Yersong's advice is that one specific thing beats a paragraph of praise. A running joke, the thing the person always says, how the couple met or the holiday that went wrong are the kinds of details that end up in the words.
Lyrics come first and can be edited. After the form is submitted, Yersong writes the words and displays them on screen. The user can tap any line and rewrite it, keeping roughly the same line length, and changes save automatically. When the lyrics read right, the user chooses "Hear it sung," and Yersong records the singing, draws the album cover and makes a short video. The site says this step takes about two minutes and asks the user to keep the page open while it runs. If a recording fails, the page offers to try again.
Yersong uses the recipient's approximate age for one purpose: choosing the kind of music the person probably grew up loving. The range runs from a song made for children through 2000s pop, 90s alternative, 80s synth-pop and 70s soul to 60s pop. According to the site, the age is never sung and never shown. After the song is sung, the user gets one do-over, which replaces the first take with a new one.
At the end, the recipient has a page of their own with the video, the lyrics and a link anyone can open. The song can be downloaded as an MP3, and Yersong provides a printable 5-by-7 card with a code that plays the song when scanned, ready to tuck into a gift. Visitors can hear the format before making their own: the homepage carries a sample song that a dad made for his daughter.
"One specific thing beats a paragraph of praise. A running joke, the thing they always say, how you met: those are the details that end up in the words," said Bo Bennett, Spokesperson, Yersong.
Because anyone with the link can play a song, the site asks users to leave out private or sensitive details. Yersong does not charge for songs. Because the songs are free, there is a daily limit for each visitor and another for the site as a whole, and a visitor who reaches either limit is asked to come back the next day. Visitors who would like to give something in return are pointed to Boston Children's Hospital instead. The site states that every penny of such a gift goes to the hospital and none of it goes to Yersong.
